Birth. It’s a miraculous time—where a new life that’s been inside the mother makes an appearance in the wide world. The miracle of life never gets old. Each one of my children is precious beyond belief, and I wouldn’t trade them.

But if you asked me to sit down and watch a filming of the event, I’d pass.

To me, the birth process should be rated R or X, not something that is shown in TLC during primetime—over and over and over again.

Now, I must confess that I actually believe that it would be a good thing for a child of a certain age to actually participate in the whole process ((The birthing process, that is…) and to understand what is going on. It’s a fascinating time, and it doesn’t happen all that often (unless you’re the Duggars and even then you have to wait every 9 months at least).

But at the same time, why is it that women like to watch other people do this on television. I mean, to some degree I can understand seeing the strange cases and being able to comfort yourself by saying “Well, my pregnancy wasn’t really that bad, and she made it” or “My pregnancy was way worse than that one, suck it up!” I could also see watching the cutesy stories that focus on the family before and after.

But why do you actively want to feel that pain again? Why do you like the site of blood or seeing someone’s gut ripped open. I’m telling you, my sympathy pains are going just writing this post. When I sit down to actually try to watch this, and they’re going to do a C-Section, I cover my eyes with my shirt.

I’m sure that this would have been Chinese Baby Torture (instead of Chinese Water Torture) had they thought of it—hundreds of GI’s would have been forced to watch C-Sections, and it wouldn’t have been pretty.

Rachel gives us the third lie that wives believe, coming from a fictitious husband:

Wife: "Sweetie, I’d like to watch Barefoot Contessa and see what she’s cooking today."
Hubby: "Great idea, I love Barefoot Contessa. And while we’re at it, maybe we can catch an episode of What Not to Wear."

I must confess. I’ve watched a few episodes of What Not to Wear myself. But then, the idea of spending $2,000 on such few articles of clothing and chopping off hair that took years to grow just started getting old.

What this one is getting at, I believe, is that men and women have different ideas of what makes entertainment. And people usually like to have company when they watch television (even if they are the mind-numbed robot while the show is on).

Why does the guy lie about wanting to watch your shows?

My guess is that he wants the reciprocal treatment when he wants to watch an action flick. He’s saying “I’ll watch this with you, if you’ll watch this with me.” Or perhaps, he might just be wanting to have more time to play Video Games. You never know.
