The Origin of Wedding Vows

According to Wikipedia:

Marriage vows are binding promises each partner in a couple makes to the other during a wedding ceremony. Marriage customs have developed over history and keep changing as human society develops. In earlier times and in most cultures the consent of the partners has not had the importance now attached to it, at least in Western societies and those they have influenced.

They then proceed to give the wedding vows as they were originally constituted in The Book of Common Prayer and the more traditional vows that are used today.

On Tuesday it’s story time.  Yep, back to the misadventures of our peerless group of couples as they stumble from one adventure to the next.

We’ve done some of these before, and hopefully we’ll actually have a coherent storyline you can follow of the lives of Adam and Tracy, Noah and Laura and the rest of the gang from MInTheGap Fiction, and who knows?  We might just learn something about marriage along the way.

On Mondays, we’re going to try to help you look in on a huband’s mind and peer in there to try to help you understand where he’s coming from, his focus, his temptations, and answer any questions we might get as to why a husband does what he does.

We’ll also look at things that he should be doing and should not be doing, and hopefully get a lot of discussion here!

On Sundays, we’re going to look into different wives from the Bible.  And not just the major ones.  The Bible has a lot to say about marriage, family, and the roles of men and women!

I think you’ll find this study interesting as we look through the lives of some Biblical wives, and even see how husbands really haven’t changed that much either.

Couple Kissing

Most of the time your husband comes home from work and if he doesn’t announce his presence with a “Honey, I’m home” he’s the one to initiate any kind of interaction.  It’s like he needs to make sure that people know he’s there.

As a father, I can tell you that one of the most special things about my kids is that, while they’re little, they watch and wave to me as I leave in the morning and rush to meet me at the door when I come home from work at night.  They’re truly excited to see me.

be with me 2Tale as old as time:

  • Boy meets girl.
  • Boy falls in love with girl.
  • Boy proposes to girl.
  • Boy marries girl.
  • Boy and girl live happily ever after.

But what if it wasn’t love?  What if it was indigestion?  And what happens to a marriage based on love when that love wanes?

Marriage, A Promise For Life

CoupleSunSet

When you looked at marriage as a kid, you looked at the idea of two people who were in love and that would love each other and live together forever.

That is, of course, the ideal.  Marriage was created to bind two people and make them one—physically, emotionally and spiritually.

The vows that are said on wedding day are more than just empty words that sound good, they are a promise that is made between life partners about what the other can expect for the rest of their life.
