If we would all just be honest & let someone see that sometimes we have piles of towels on the couch (and floor, and chairs, and tables, etc...) then we would all feel so much better about our housecleaning skills! Or maybe we could just have a fieldtrip where we all visit each others' homes on a very messy day and vow to still love each other. That comparison thing is a real temptation, and you are absolutely right - it can be disastrous and for me, I've found it can hinder me from serving God through hospitality. I'm a Believer!
